Fisheries Research Institute (F.R.I; www.inale.gr) is one specialized research institute of HAO-DEMETER being responsible to conduct research and to promote technological development in the fishery and environmental sector. The research activities of F.R.I cover a wide range of fields in the marine research and applications sector. F.R.I. participates in many research programs (European Community and National) which consist the main funding source for its research activities. The main object of the “Environmental Sector” and the Laboratory of “Benthic Ecology and Technology” under the Lead of Dr. S. Orfanidis is the study of benthic plants and animals living in transitional (lagoons, river delta’s) and coastal ecosystems, as well as their interactions with biotic and abiotic environment. Focus is given to the scale-based study (space, time and aggregation) of aquatic biodiversity as a tool to monitor, assess and manage of aquatic ecosystem changes (ecosystemic approach). Of particular interest is the development of new environmentally friendly technologies in the sectors of aquaculture and phytoremediation. Role in AFRIMEDWP1 by leading the collection of historical and new data, mapping and identification of drivers responsible of regime shifts in the Cystoseira habitat; WP2 contribution to laboratory ecophysiological experiments; WP3 contribution to field works; WP4 contribution to the identification of the ecosystem services; WP5 contribution to Stakeholders groups; WP6 contribution to the project dissemination, and WP7 contribution to the project managing as member of the Steering Committee. StaffDr. Sotirios Orfanidis (male) is Senior Researcher and lead of the «Benthic Ecology and Technology» Lab. He aims to study the benthic macrophyte biodiversity of transitional and coastal ecosystems, as well as their interactions with the abiotic environmental factors such as salinity, nutrients, and irradiance (PAR and UV) through factorial ecologically relevant laboratory (e.g., butch cultivation) and field manipulative experiments. Of high priority is the GIS-mapping of benthic macrophytes and development of stay of the art technologies and tools for the protection of the marine environment, e.g., bioindicators, integrated aquaculture. He published more than 100 papers of which 50 in refereed international scientific journals and books. He was involved in more than 20 National or European Projects, (co)organised or invited speaker in symposia and workshops, obtained scholarships from international organizations (DAAD, EC, OECD), sector editor in two international journals and reviewer in several other journals.Dr. Vasilios Papathanasiou (male) is a research assistant graduate of the Department of Marine Sciences, Aegean University, Greece. During his doctoral thesis at the University of Plymouth (UK), he dealt with the use of essential metric of marine angiosperms to assess the ecological quality of the coastal zone. It has been involved in developing tools for coastal zone monitoring programs, such as the CymoSkew indicator, which meets the requirements of the 2000/60/EU Water Framework Directive. At the same time, he has developed methodologies for early estimation of the status of angiosperm meadows based on their physiology study (PSII performance), has studied the effects of climate change on them, and is concerned with the mapping and conservation of these ecologically and economically important habitats. He is a diver and has 14 publications in peer reviewed international journals and conference proceedings. Role in the AFRIMED: Expert in Cystoseira sampling and mapping with GIS.Apostolos Papadimitriou (MSc) (male) is a Technologist Ichthyologist belonging in the permanent research of the FRI research center. He has 15 years of experience specializing in the collection, maintenance and cultivation of biological materials, including Cystoseira. He is a diver and key member of the Benthic Ecology & Technology Laboratory and has been actively involved in all research projects.Konstantinia Nakou (female) is a Technologist Ichthyologist belonging in the permanent research of the FRI research center. She has 15 years of experience specializing in the collection and treatment in the laboratory of biological materials, including Cystoseira. He is a key member of the Benthic Ecology & Technology Laboratory and has been actively involved in all research projects.
